The Moonlight Fund
The Moonlight Fund: A support fund for burn survivors
The Moonlight Fund Inc. is a privately-funded organization that provides financial, emotional, and in-kind support to military and civilian burn survivors and their family members.
The organization was founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 1998 by burn survivors Celia Belt and Henry Coffeen lll, staff of the Burn Unit at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), and Ernst & Young executives.
Having assisted nearly 10,000+ people since its inception, The Moonlight Fund is planning to expand nationally. The Moonlight Fund is unique in that it delivers care at the onset of a burn injury through rehabilitation and on into the many years of recovery. Services include paying medical bills, providing financial aid to complete college degrees, furnishing homes, hosting healing retreats and providing an ongoing support system for burn survivors and their families.
The average length of a hospital stay for a significant burn survivor is 93 days. However, depending on the severity of injuries, or the physical & occupational therapy needed, it can take years for life to resume to some level of normalcy. These are life-changing injuries that effect the survivor in many ways. In addition to the physical suffering, many times homes and personal belongings are destroyed as a result of fire. Jobs can be lost from extended medical treatments. To make matters worse, many burn patients are uninsured or on government assistance, putting them in a devastating financial situation when physical therapy or psychological counseling is needed the most.
Guided by the principle, “We’ll Measure Our Success… by the Lives We Touch,” The Moonlight Fund keeps operating costs at a minimum so that the majority of funds raised are used directly to support patients and their families. For more information, visit www.moonlightfund.org or call 210-415-3406.
